Solanum lycopersicum
The modern tomato has been bred from wild forms found in South America.
In tropical and subtropical areas of Australia tomatoes can be grown all year round. In temperate areas tomatoes are a summer crop generally available from December through to April. Plant from August to November.
Tomato is an annual plant requiring warm growing temperatures between 15 and 30°C. It is frost-sensitive and must be planted after the risk of frost.
A wide range of varieties is available varying from small cherry types to egg- shaped Romas to large round beefsteak types.
Tomatoes require at least 6 hrs of sunlight to thrive. They can be grown in well-drained soil or in potting mix in a tub at least 25cm in diameter. Mulch the surface of the soil to keep the roots cool.
Most tomato plants require some support on a stake to maintain good air circulation around the fruit. Keep the soil moist with regular watering and feed with a soluble fertiliser once a fortnight. Tomatoes may be harvested about 12 weeks after planting.
