Papaver somniferum
It is believed the Poppy originated in the Mediterranean region. The flower is now mainly grown in eastern and southern Asia, and South Eastern Europe.
Garden poppies are in full bloom late spring to early summer.
Slender, long-stemmed flowers with large, bright coloured flower heads with a single whorl of 4-6 petals. Petals are large and thin with a ‘papery’ complexion surrounding a large central cluster of stamens and anthers.
Petals are showy, may be of almost any colour and some have markings.
Plant in a sunny position with well-draining soil. Poppies will rot in water-logged soil. Make sure plants are protected from strong winds.
Remove old flower heads as they fade a wilt to keep plants looking clean and encourage new flowers to grow. Fertilise with a soluble plant food once a month.
