Petunia X hybrida
Modern varieties of petunias are the result of intensive breeding of wild forms originating from South America.
Petunias grow year-round in sub-tropical and tropical climates and during the warmer months in temperate climates.
Herbaceous flowering plant with large ‘trumpet’-shaped flowers in a range of colours.
Petunias come in a range of flower sizes and colours in shades of white, pink, red, mauve, blue and purple as well as striped bicolour.
Petunia grows well in a sunny position in the garden and adapts well to hanging baskets, pots and troughs on patios. The flowers may be damaged by heavy rain although smaller-flowered types are less affected.
Petunia grows best when the soil is kept moist by regular watering. Fertilize with a soluble plant food once a fortnight to maintain continuous flowering.
