Viola X wittrockiana
Modern varieties of pansies are bred from wild pansies and violas from around the world.
Pansies perform best flowering in the cooler months of the year and are generally planted in autumn and spring.
Pansies are often confused for Violas but pansies generally refer to the larger flowering forms that are often multi-coloured.
Pansy flower colours range from shades of cream, yellow, orange, blue, purple and violet. The flowers generally have a “smiling face” of multicolours.
Pansies require a sheltered spot in full sun or semi shade in a well-drained soil. They also grow very well in potting mix in a tub or trough on a patio.
Pansy grows best when the soil is kept moist by regular watering. Fertilize with a soluble plant food once a fortnight and remove dead flowers to maintain continuous flowering.
